British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages leading to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
