Doris Secures Spot in Irish Squad While Joe McCarthy Omitted
Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has included skipper Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall internationals, however lock McCarthy is absent.
Doris, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, with doubts lingering if he will be fit to play against New Zealand in Chicago on November 1.
Second row McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening Lions Test against Australia in July.
Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash are also absent due to fitness concerns, and number 15 Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation after the Lions tour.
Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole new player in the 34-man group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says new provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Bolton will head to Chicago as "backup".
After facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their previous encounter, Ireland will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented the coach, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a mostly familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again vie for the first-choice fly-half position. The fly-half role is still available, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the third number 10 chosen with the coach deciding not to calling up the province's Harry Byrne.
At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Blade, chosen to club-mate Murphy.
Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of centre options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at number 15.
Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.
McCarthy is the only new name in the Ireland pack. The front rower has been in a couple of his province's URC league games so far and played in the second string's loss by England in the English city earlier this year.
McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a international appearance.
Munster lock Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.
Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions matches during the tour, is set to deputise for the captain if the captain does not regain fitness in time to play the All Blacks.
The national team will meet in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to the US on Tuesday.
