The Latest Mayhem Mounts Drop Brings Forth a Stunningly Wild New Spear to the Game

The seasonal game drop for Minecraft has landed — and it includes the initial fresh armament introduced into the title since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it has the potential to revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, particularly when you enjoy mayhem.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mayhem Mounts update also introduces several new features and updates focused on riding animals in the game. That central theme made the spear the ideal addition for this release, as the development team had long felt it was time for a new weapon.

"We knew initially that we wanted a new weapon that would provide extended reach, and we envisioned it for mounted combat," noted a senior product manager. "We experimented with a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both played wonderfully when we tested our prototypes and also was visually fitting for the intended purpose."

If you're curious whether fighting from a saddle means you can joust against your companions on horseback, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack ideally crafted for it.

"[Jousting on horses is a primary applications for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the developer adds. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the quick stab, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and inflict increased harm [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] ideal for mounted duels."

Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures

The chaotic fun can extend beyond there, though. If you're far enough into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] perfect for equipping the wings and flying forth and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she teases.

In other words: Sky jousting is now possible, and it deserves to be an competitive event without delay.

Another significant inclusion in this new update is the underwater mount. This aquatic being, which is modeled after the nautilus shells we've all been collecting for years, can be domesticated and ridden for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it move you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also maintain your air supply, so there's no requirement to surface for oxygen.

The remaining new features are primarily things that want to kill you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a undead nautilus appearing in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in defeat the Drowned, though, you can tame the zombie Nautilus — or the standard version, for that matter — with a puffer fish.

"We've long considered this issue for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the ideal opportunity to also unveil something for underwater," the developer explains. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a several proposals for sea mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus design sketches looked impressive, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."

She also notes that there are actually a pair of variants of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you discover underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Other additions include the Parched, biome-specific undead archers that can survive in the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you end up in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. Camel husks have an excellent design that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a comparable exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.

The remaining updates on the drop's list are refinements, including some much-anticipated tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can ford bodies of water while riding a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now available at the workbench, so you can give your horse the best defense it deserves.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

In summary, the last content update of the year is a pretty good one. The spear on its own — and the mayhem it enables — would have felt like a significant enhancement. Combine that with the Nautilus, and more things trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.

The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is out now for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
