The megacity Awakens to Toxic Smog Following Diwali

Tuesday brought residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves breathing extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" category.

Record-Breaking Pollution Levels

Several parts of Delhi recorded an pollution measurement over 500, which translates to ten times the safe threshold established by the WHO.

In some locations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times above healthy standards.

Fireworks Prohibition and New Changes

Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that blankets the city as winter begins.

Yet earlier this year, the newly elected regional government approached the judicial authority to propose a easing of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically questioned by conservation groups as being only about 30% lower impact – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".

Judicial Decision and Enforcement

To the disappointment of medical and ecological campaigners, the court complied with the proposal, mandating that green firecrackers could be set off during limited periods throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the designated hours across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Several recording stations throughout the city registered contamination peaking around midnight to some of the worst readings observed during the festival in at least three years.

International Implications

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the festival also initiated a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming worsening air quality in their urban centers on hazardous particles traveling from neighboring India following the events.

Chronic Pollution Crisis

Alarmingly severe levels of air contamination in the capital have remained as a significant challenge for over a decade and a half, with the situation continuing to worsen.

Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of hazardous airborne contaminants in the air has been found to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak levels ever documented in the Chinese city, which was formerly viewed as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Diverse Pollution Contributors

This crisis in Delhi is resulting from a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, construction activities, rubbish burning and haze from farm burning in nearby states of farming communities.

In these regions, farmers illegally set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, producing toxic pollution that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as colder air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Impact

The economic and health toll on the nearly 33 million residents living in the capital region is enormous, according to numerous investigations.

This pollution causes elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can result in cancer.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for 10,000 premature mortalities per year in the capital.
