In honor of the 250th anniversary of US independence, the treasury department is contemplating the issuance of a $1 coin depicting President Trump with a tightened fist under an US flag and the inscription “fight, fight, fight”.
Event-Driven Link
This inscription clearly alludes to what Trump declared right after narrowly surviving an attempt on his life a few months before he gained a second presidency.
Official Announcement
US Treasurer Brandon Beach shared a preliminary design of the coin on Friday via X, commenting: “This is genuine. These drafts celebrating America’s 250th birthday and [Trump] are authentic.”
The online announcement – which boosted another account discussing the coin concept – indicated that Beach looked “excited to reveal additional details” after the resolution of the government funding lapse that began after Wednesday night when Senate Democrats seeking compromises on health policy and other budgetary issues refused to provide the votes necessary to pass a majority-backed funding bill.
Authorization Background
As highlighted, in 2020, at the close of his initial term, Trump signed cross-party law authorizing the treasury secretary to mint $1 coins during the year 2026 that are “symbolic of the United States semiquincentennial”.
Design Elements
One side of the coin on whose concept Beach commented this week showed Trump’s portrait alongside “Freedom”, “In God We Trust”, and “from 1776 to 2026”.
The other side evoked the effort to harm Trump at a campaign event in Pennsylvania last year, when officials said a shooter wounded Trump’s ear and wounded two others before being fatally shot by the US Secret Service.
Trump raised his fist after the incident – one of two assassination attempts for him as he campaign victoriously for a return to the White House in 2024 – and yelled, “Fight! Fight! Fight!” with an US flag prominent nearby.
Department Comment
A statement from a treasury department spokesperson indicated that the concept which Beach’s social media post discussed was not the “final $1 coin design”. But the response emphasized that “this draft effectively captures the lasting character of our country and democratic system, even in the midst of major hurdles”.
Public Context
Trump’s approval rating on generally has declined to low levels, as his current term has reduced medical safeguards and food aid that benefits the needy, while also imposing tariffs that preceded a documented rise in everyday expenses.
Additionally, the administration has also sent US armed forces into the streets of multiple cities, eliminated roughly significant funding in support for inoculations such as the ones that helped end the Covid pandemic, and faced challenges to contain a issue over his previous relationship with deceased sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein.
